Company size tiers

Production Type licenses are issued according to a total number of employees within a company. Production Type licenses always cover the whole company, so that the font files can be freely shared across a given organization.

Not all tiers can be directly licensed online, and must be arranged via our office.

Why We Use Company Size as the Licensing Metric

At Production Type, we’ve adopted a licensing model that uses company size as the first metric to determine the price of font licenses. This approach simplifies the process and ensures fairness for both the client and the foundry. Here’s why we don’t use metrics like number of users, devices, or web traffic, and why company size is a more effective metric:

1. Value-Based Pricing

We believe that the value fonts bring to a company increases with its size. Larger companies derive more value from branding and marketing efforts, and smaller companies or individuals extract less value from the same font. By using the company’s size a metric, we ensure that font pricing reflects the real impact on the client’s business rather than usage-based criteria.

2. Simplicity

Tracking the number of users, devices, or web pageviews is tedious, complex, and difficult to monitor. Many companies find it difficult predict future web traffic or device usage accurately, leading to confusion and compliance issues. With company size as the single metric, it only needs to provide one easily accessible number: the total number of employees in an organization. This makes the purchasing process straightforward and transparent.

3. No Monitoring of Usage

Unlike some models that require constant tracking of how fonts are used (e.g., pageviews, CPU counts, or device counts), our model frees you from this hassle. Once you purchase a license based on your company’s size, you’re free to circulate the fonts across your organization without the need to monitor usage or worry about hidden costs down the road.

4. Avoiding Outdated Metrics

Metrics like “per device” or “per user” were valid in the past, but they no longer suit today’s multi-device, multi-platform world. Counting users or devices doesn’t accurately reflect how companies use fonts today, where an individual might use multiple devices. Our model, based on company size, adapts to modern business environments where flexibility and ease of use are key.

About Social Media Followers and App Downloads for Specific Licenses

For our Social Media and App licenses, we use social media followers (cumulated across all channels) and app downloads as metrics because these are publicly available and easily verifiable numbers. Follower counts and download numbers are concrete data points that reflect the actual reach and impact of your content or app, aligning the cost of the license with the size of your audience.

About Zone-Based and Time-Based Pricing for Corporate Licenses

For certain corporate licenses, we apply zone-based and time-based pricing models, drawing from the vocabulary of art buying. These metrics are widely understood and accepted across industries, making them a natural fit for licensing. Just like when purchasing photography or other creative assets, companies are accustomed to paying for usage rights based on geographical regions (zones) or for specific durations (time). The fee applies to specific markets or campaigns.
